The Sleeping Beauty Ballet is a precious encyclopedia of Classical dance. Due to the enchanting music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, this Fairy Tale of Charles Perrault was turned into a magnificent spectacle and a luxurious ballet extravaganza. The premiere of the Ballet took place on January 3, 1890, and made a splash on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia
As the splendor of the court during the reign of Louis XIV became the basis of the scenes and is felt throughout the general spirit of this Ballet - the opulent scenery becomes its perfect backdrop. In it, the Palace is enveloped in velvet and sparkles in gilding, reflecting as the dancers shine in luxurious costumes. It is no coincidence that the Sleeping Beauty Ballet is considered the most expensive production in the world of ballet!
The majestic music of Tchaikovsky reveals the fairy tale of Charles Pierrot, well-known since childhood, from a new side: The performance truly delights with the scenes of a solemn procession, a masquerade ball, at which all the heroes of Pierrot's popular fairy tales gather: Puss in Boots and the White Cat, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Cinderella and Prince Fortuné, Tom Thumb, his brothers and the Ogre, Bluebird.
In the center of the ballet are the romantic images of Princess Aurora and Prince Desire passionately in love. A special place among the characters of this ballet extravaganza is occupied by the Seven Fairies: The Fairy of Tenderness (a.k.a. Candide)
The Fairy of Generosity (a.k.a. Coulante, Fleur de Farine)
The Fairy of Serenity (a.k.a. Miettes qui Tombe, Breadcrumb)
The Fairy of Playfulness (a.k.a. Canary, Song-Bird)
The Fairy of Courage (a.k.a. Violante)
The Jewels (a.k.a. the Diamond Fairy, Gold Fairy, Silver Fairy, and Sapphire Fairy)
The Evil Fairy Carabosse
In the Ballet Sleeping Beauty, the choreography of the production fully reveals its musical theme and the unique qualities of the characters - the great choreographer Marius Petipa embodied the perfection of movement in every act of the ballet, with everything thought out through to the smallest detail. It was thanks to his efforts that Sleeping Beauty turned into an anthology of classical ballet, incorporating all of its most refined and enchanting elements.
Since its premiere in 1890, the ballet has remained a recognized masterpiece of ballet art without stopping its triumphant journey around the world:
1923: an abridged version of Aurora's Wedding under the title "Magic Feast" (La Fête Merveilleuse) was presented in the Mirror Gallery of the Palace of Versailles in Paris. For the next 100 years The Sleeping Beauty (though already in its full version) does not leave the bill of the Palace of Versailles!
1925: Aurora’s Wedding was staged again in Monte Carlo (under the title “Les Contes de Fées”).
1946: It was with the Sleeping Beauty that the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden (London) reopened after World War II!
1954: Sleeping Beauty is staged at the Opera Theater in Rome.
1966: Premiere of the performance at La Scala. The main part of Prince Desire was performed by the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev. 23 years later, Nureyev stages the Sleeping Beauty for the Paris Opera.
2015: the Ballet appears on the Bill of the American National Ballet
AND NOW!
